This year for Christmas I thought it would be fun to roast some Chestnuts on an open fire while Jack Frost nipped at our noses. I was disappointed when my grocer only had small, tiny Chestnuts - but I figured we would make it work. When I got home my hubby commented that he didn't think they were Chestnuts, so after a little research I found that I had actually bought Hazelnuts. Oh, silly me. No complaints here, they were awesome!
We used our trusty Meatball Basket to hold the Hazelnuts as they roasted.
It worked wonderful.
It worked wonderful.
I even had a little help loading the Hazelnuts into said basket. :)
It took about 10-15 minutes for the Hazelnuts to roast over an open fire. Their shells will start to crack when they are done. At that point we removed them from the heat and placed in a brown bag to stay warm until they were eaten. (If you are cold you will want to be the person holding the bag - it is so warm!!) Just pop the shells with a nutcracker or pliers - whatever you have on hand. Enjoy!
